Does the ACT raise funds for a cause?
Raising funds is not one of the purposes of the ACT. The ACT is a “break-even” proposition for the Eco-tourism committee. Your registration fee, and the cash donations we receive from sponsors pay for the promotional costs that we incur. So far, we have not had to worry about what to do with left over funds.
If ACT is not a fund-raiser, why do you do it?
The Eco-tourism committee puts on the ACT because it's fun, it's a good way to introduce new people to the natural beauty of Arkona, it builds community interest, and it gets us all moving. Enjoying the outdoors in an active way is good for the health of our bodies and minds.
Tell me about the cycle route.
The cycle route can be anywhere from about 20K to 60K long. The route is well marked and monitored by support vehicles. There is one refreshment stop and one port-a-john along the route. All roads are paved; most are pretty quiet. Townsend line has the most traffic and that segment is only 5K long. There are lots of hills: if you ride 60K you will descend and climb out of the Ausable river gorge 4 times, climb and descend the Wyoming moraine twice, and descend and climb out of the Thedford bog once. Great fun!!
Do I have to be an experienced cyclist?
Cyclists of all levels are very welcome. You can go as far as you want and turn around and come back. We have riders of all ages and abilities; and every imaginable kind of bike. Keep in mind that, in order to participate in the prizes, you need to be back to Arkona by 12:30. If you want to ride 60K you have to be pretty fast. Think about the wind direction, and turn around to head home in lots of time. The cycling route is not monitored after 1:00pm.
Can my kids ride with me?
Kids are welcome to ride, but must be with a parent or guardian all the time. The first segment of the ride, Townsend Line, is a busy road; not suitable for children under 13 years of age. We recommend the Rock Glen Hike for families with young children.
What is the hiking route like? Is it difficult?
The hiking route begins in Arkona, proceeds to Rock Glen Conservation area, and continues through the trails at Rock Glen, then back to Arkona. The shortest route is about 5K. Once in Rock Glen you have the option of exploring as many trails as you like. Our hike guide is a well-spring of interesting information about the natural environment of Rock Glen. You may stay close to the guide or walk at your own pace, following your own route.
Can I do both the cycle route and the hike route?
The guided hike and monitored ride both take place prior to lunch. If you want to do both, we suggest you start with the ride, then after lunch head for Rock Glen on your own. Your registration provides you with access to Rock Glen all day.
What if it rains on the event day?
Hiking and cycling are outdoor activities – weather is part of the deal. If it rains we will still continue with the event, however if it is unsafe due to lightening, wind or heavy rain we will call off the ride and hike, and simply give away the prizes!
